Which has better research opportunities for undergraduates, Boston College or Northeastern?

I’m trying to decide between Boston College and Northeastern, and research opportunities are a big factor for me. I want to be at a school where undergrads can actually get involved in research fairly early, not just watch from the sidelines.

I’m mostly looking for a general comparison of how accessible research tends to be at each school.

For undergraduate research access specifically, Northeastern usually has the edge. It is a much larger research university, and its co-op model often gives students additional pathways into lab and applied research roles both on campus and with outside organizations.

That said, Boston College can be very good for undergrads who want closer faculty mentoring, especially because it has smaller scale departments and fewer graduate students competing for attention in some areas. If your priority is the sheer volume and variety of opportunities, Northeastern is generally stronger. If your priority is a more intimate academic environment where faculty may know you sooner, Boston College can be appealing.

At Northeastern, undergrads often benefit from the university’s strong emphasis on experiential learning. Research is available through labs, university institutes, and co-op placements, and students in engineering, health sciences, computer science, and STEM fields in particular tend to find many entry points.

At Boston College, research exists across sciences, social sciences, and humanities, but the overall ecosystem is smaller and less research-intensive. That can mean fewer total openings, especially in highly sought-after STEM labs, but it can also mean undergraduates who do join may get meaningful responsibility relatively quickly. BC is often strongest for students who want faculty-guided scholarship in a more traditional residential college setting.
