Boston College vs WashU for research opportunities: which is better?

I’m trying to decide between Boston College and WashU, and research opportunities are a big factor for me. I want a school where it’s realistic for an undergrad to get involved in research early and build strong experience over time.

I’m not sure how these two compare in terms of access to labs, faculty mentorship, and overall research culture for undergrads.

For undergraduate research specifically, WashU is generally the stronger choice. If your priority is getting involved early and having a wide range of active projects to choose from, WashU usually offers more depth and scale.

Washington University in St. Louis is a major R1 research university with extensive ties to its medical school and affiliated research centers, which creates a large volume of opportunities for undergraduates. Students commonly get into labs by emailing faculty, through departmental connections, or through structured programs like summer research fellowships and undergraduate research offices. The breadth matters here: even if one lab is full, there are usually many others in adjacent fields.

Boston College does offer meaningful undergraduate research, and one advantage is that faculty access can feel more personal because the university is somewhat less research-saturated. In some departments, that can translate into closer mentorship and less competition within a smaller pool. But overall, BC is not as research-intensive as WashU.

If your interests are more in the humanities or certain social sciences, both schools can support research, but WashU still tends to have more formal funding and infrastructure.

So if the question is which school is better for maximizing research access, starting early, and building a long research record, the safer answer is WashU. BC can still be a good fit if you strongly prefer its overall environment and are comfortable being more proactive in seeking opportunities.
