Boston College vs. Northeastern for computer science: which is better for CS students?

I’m trying to decide between Boston College and Northeastern and I’m leaning toward computer science. I know both are in Boston, but they seem pretty different when it comes to academics, internships, and student experience.

I’m mainly trying to understand which school is generally the stronger choice for a CS major.

For computer science specifically, Northeastern is generally the stronger choice. If your priority is maximizing internships, hands-on experience, and employer connections in tech, Northeastern usually has the edge.

Boston College can still work for CS, but it is not usually seen as the stronger CS destination between the two. BC’s strengths are more often associated with its broader liberal arts foundation, business, and a traditional residential college experience. Its computer science department is smaller, and while students can absolutely do well there, it usually offers fewer built-in experiential opportunities than Northeastern’s co-op model.

Academically, Northeastern tends to offer more depth and breadth in computing-related coursework and a more tech-centered culture. That matters if you want lots of classmates in CS, more specialized electives, and a campus environment where internships and recruiting are central to student life.

Student experience is where the decision can get closer. Boston College usually feels more like a classic campus with school spirit, Division I sports, and a more traditional social scene. Northeastern often feels more career-focused and urban, with students cycling in and out for co-ops, so the rhythm of campus life can feel less traditional.

If the question is simply which is better for a CS student, the clearer answer is Northeastern. BC makes more sense if you strongly prefer its campus culture and would choose a more traditional college experience even if the CS ecosystem is not quite as strong.
