Is majoring in business at William & Mary a good choice for someone interested in both business and liberal arts?

I’m a high school junior looking at colleges where I could study business without giving up a broader liberal arts education. William & Mary keeps coming up, but I’m not sure how its business major compares to schools that are more business-focused.

I’m trying to figure out whether it’s a strong fit for someone who wants solid business classes but also cares about smaller classes, writing, and a more traditional college atmosphere.

Yes, William & Mary can be a very strong fit for that mix. Its undergraduate business program is well regarded, but the university still feels distinctly liberal arts oriented, with small to medium class sizes, strong writing expectations, and a traditional residential campus in Williamsburg. If you want business training without being in a preprofessional environment all the time, W&M is one of the better-known options for that balance.

A key detail is that business at William & Mary is housed in the Raymond A. Mason School of Business. That setup can be appealing if you want time to explore economics, psychology, data science, government, or another liberal arts field before fully committing. It also means your first-year and sophomore coursework will be shaped by the broader undergraduate curriculum, not just business requirements.

Compared with more business-focused schools, W&M usually offers less of the intense, all-business culture and a bit more emphasis on discussion, writing, ethics, and interdisciplinary thinking. The alumni network in business is solid, especially in consulting, finance, accounting, and East Coast markets, but the overall vibe is still more academic and campus-centered than purely careerist.

The main tradeoff is that if you want the biggest possible business school ecosystem, tons of business majors around you, or a direct-entry undergraduate business experience from day one, some more specialized programs may feel stronger. But if your priority is exactly what you described, strong business academics plus a real liberal arts college atmosphere, William & Mary is a good choice and probably one of the cleaner fits on your list.
