Is Dartmouth a good college choice for a computer science major?

I’m a high school junior trying to build my college list, and I’m interested in studying computer science. Dartmouth seems really strong overall, but I usually hear more about it for things other than CS.

I’m trying to figure out whether Dartmouth is actually a good place to major in computer science compared to other well-known schools, or if its strengths are more in other areas.

Yes, Dartmouth is a strong choice for computer science, especially if you want a rigorous CS education in a smaller undergraduate-focused environment. Its Department of Computer Science is well regarded, the school offers strong access to faculty and research for undergrads, and Dartmouth’s alumni network is excellent for internships and recruiting. It is not usually grouped with the very top CS powerhouses by sheer size or research volume, but it is absolutely a credible and attractive option for a CS major.

One of Dartmouth’s biggest advantages is the undergraduate experience. Classes tend to be smaller than at many large research universities, and undergrads often have meaningful access to professors, research labs, and project-based work. Dartmouth also has strengths in areas like artificial intelligence, theoretical computer science, security and privacy, human-computer interaction, and computational biology.

The main tradeoff is that Dartmouth does not have the same scale, course breadth, or overall CS ecosystem as places like MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Berkeley, or Stanford.
