What majors is William & Mary best known for academically?
I’m a high school junior starting to build my college list, and I’m trying to figure out what William & Mary is especially strong in beyond just its overall reputation.
I’m not asking which major is easiest or most popular. I mean which departments or programs are actually considered the school’s strongest academically.

William 6 Mary is especially well known for government, history, economics, English, and its undergraduate business program.
If you want the clearest “signature strengths,” I’d put government and history near the top. Economics is also a very strong and popular academic area, often paired with government, math, or business.
English and related humanities fields are another real strength. The school is known for strong teaching, close faculty access, and a serious intellectual culture, which especially benefits reading- and writing-heavy majors.
On the STEM side, William 6 Mary is solid but generally not what people mean when they talk about its top national academic reputation. Computer science has grown, and biology is respected, but the school is more distinctly known for liberal arts, social sciences, and business than for engineering or large-scale technical research.
