What kind of questions are asked in a William & Mary college interview?

I’m thinking about applying to William & Mary and I’m trying to get a realistic sense of what their interview is like. I do better when I know the general style of questions ahead of time, so I’m wondering what types of questions usually come up and how conversational it feels.

William & Mary interviews are usually pretty conversational and meant to help the school get a fuller sense of you beyond the application. They are not typically designed to trip you up, so the questions tend to be straightforward, reflective, and centered on your interests, experiences, and fit with the school.

You can expect questions along the lines of: tell me about yourself, why are you interested in William & Mary, what academic subjects excite you most, and what do you do outside the classroom. They may also ask about a meaningful activity, a challenge you have faced, a community you are part of, or something important that has shaped how you think.

Some interviewers ask follow-up questions based on what you say, so the conversation can feel natural rather than scripted. If you mention research, theater, debate, service, or a specific class interest, they may ask what drew you to that area, what you learned from it, or how you hope to keep pursuing it in college.

For William & Mary specifically, it helps to be ready for fit-focused questions. That could mean explaining why their academic environment appeals to you, what kinds of discussions or communities you want to join, and how you see yourself contributing.

You should also be prepared to ask a few questions of your own. Good ones are specific, like asking about classroom culture, undergraduate research access, traditions, or how students balance academics with extracurricular life.
