How does the William & Mary honors program work for incoming undergraduates?

I’m looking at William & Mary and keep seeing references to an honors program, but I’m not sure what that actually changes for students once they enroll.

I’m trying to understand what the program is like in practice, such as the academic experience and whether it feels meaningfully different from the regular undergraduate experience.

At William & Mary, the main honors option for incoming students is the James Monroe Scholars Program, and yes, it does create a meaningfully different academic experience, though it is not a separate college within the university. Monroe Scholars are selected as incoming first-years based on their application, and the program is centered more on academic enrichment and research than on special housing or an entirely different core curriculum. In practice, the biggest differences are priority access to certain opportunities, faculty mentorship, and funding for independent work.

William & Mary is already known for strong undergraduate research, and this program gives students an earlier, more structured path into that environment. That can matter a lot if you want close faculty interaction, original research, or a more discussion-based academic community from the start.

The day-to-day student experience is still mostly integrated with the broader undergraduate population. Monroe Scholars take regular classes, live alongside other students, and participate in the same campus life as everyone else. So it usually does not feel like an isolated honors college; it feels more like an added layer of academic opportunity on top of the standard William & Mary experience.

There are also honors experiences beyond entry, including departmental honors later on.
