How easy is it for undergraduates at William & Mary to get involved in research?
I'm thinking about applying to William & Mary, and one of the main things I want in a college is the chance to do research as an undergrad, not just in grad school. I'm especially wondering whether students can get involved pretty early or if research spots are mostly for upperclassmen.
I'm trying to figure out how accessible undergraduate research really is there before I decide how seriously to consider the school.

It’s quite accessible, and William & Mary is one of the stronger places for undergraduate research because it does not have the same heavy graduate student presence that can crowd out undergrads at larger research universities. In practice, that means undergrads are often doing real research rather than just assisting from the sidelines.
The Charles Center is a big reason research is visible and structured there.
Accessibility does vary some by department. In fields like biology, chemistry, psychology, and environmental science, there are many lab-based opportunities, but you still usually need to be proactive about reaching out to professors. In the humanities and social sciences, research is also a real strength, often through archival work, fieldwork, policy research, or one-on-one faculty collaboration.
