Boston College vs. Dartmouth: Which College Is Better for Outdoor Activities?

Dartmouth is the stronger choice for a student whose regular routine revolves around hiking, skiing, and outdoor recreation. Its Hanover, New Hampshire setting puts the Appalachian Trail directly through town, with the White Mountains, lakes, climbing areas, and extensive trail networks close enough for frequent weekend or even short weekday outings. The student-run Dartmouth Outing Club is deeply woven into campus life and organizes trips in hiking, paddling, climbing, backcountry skiing, trail work, and more.

Ski access is a particularly meaningful difference. Dartmouth operates the Dartmouth Skiway, and students also have access to major New England mountain areas for day and weekend trips. Outdoor life is visible beyond formal clubs: students commonly use the nearby trails, the Connecticut River, the organic farm, and the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, which serves as a hub for hiking and outdoor programs.

Boston College offers outdoor options, but they require more planning and travel. Its Chestnut Hill campus is part of the Boston area, so students can use public transit and organized trips to reach places such as the Blue Hills Reservation, the Middlesex Fells, the coast, and New Hampshire or Vermont ski mountains. BC’s outdoor recreation programming and student clubs can make those trips accessible, especially for students without cars.

The tradeoff is that BC provides a more urban, city-connected college experience, while Dartmouth makes the outdoors an immediate part of daily life.
