Its Brunswick, Maine setting puts students close to the coast, islands, beaches, wooded trails, and the broader Maine outdoors, while Bowdoin’s outing-oriented culture makes it relatively easy to find peers for trips. Water activities are a particular strength, with access to sailing, kayaking, and coastal exploration tied to the school’s location and programs such as the Schiller Coastal Studies Center.

Bowdoin fits students who picture spending weekends camping, hiking, paddling, or taking longer trips into Maine and New England. The Bowdoin Outing Club helps make those activities accessible even for students who arrive without extensive experience or equipment, and the campus is less embedded in a major metro area, so outdoor recreation can feel like a central social outlet rather than an occasional break from the city.

Tufts can be a good match for someone who wants both nearby green space and Boston-area opportunities. From Medford, students can reach the Middlesex Fells Reservation for local hiking and running, and other parks and outdoor destinations are accessible around Greater Boston. Tufts also has student outdoor groups that organize hikes, climbing, skiing, and trips farther afield.

The tradeoff is that Tufts’ immediate environment is more suburban-urban than wilderness-oriented. For a student whose ideal is quick access to a city along with periodic outdoor excursions, Tufts provides a more balanced setting. For someone prioritizing frequent hiking, camping, coastal activities, and an outdoors-centered campus culture, Bowdoin has the clearer advantage.
