Is Columbia or the University of Virginia better for building a career in New York City?

The biggest practical difference is proximity: Columbia places you in Manhattan, where semester-time internships, informational interviews, employer events, and part-time work can become part of your regular routine; UVA students can absolutely reach New York employers, but usually must concentrate that work into breaks, travel for interviews, or use virtual connections. Columbia’s campus location also makes it easier to turn a short networking conversation into an in-person meeting the same week.

For careers with especially dense NYC recruiting, including finance, media, publishing, technology, consulting, nonprofits, arts, and many startup-adjacent roles, Columbia offers unusually direct day-to-day access. Its alumni network is deeply embedded in the city, and employers already know that students can be available locally during the academic year. That convenience matters most when you are proactive enough to use it, rather than assuming the location alone will create opportunities.

UVA has a large, loyal alumni community in New York and established pathways into major employers, particularly through the McIntire School of Commerce, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and other well-regarded programs. A UVA student who pursues New York-focused clubs, alumni outreach, summer internships, and career-center recruiting can build an excellent NYC launchpad. Charlottesville’s distance is a real logistical disadvantage for casual, frequent in-person networking, but it is not a barrier to landing a New York job.

UVA remains a compelling choice when its academic program, campus experience, or cost is substantially more attractive to you, especially if you are prepared to deliberately build New York connections through summers and alumni outreach.
