Is UVA or UIC better for building a career in Chicago?

UIC is the more practical choice for building a career in Chicago, especially if you want regular access to local internships and employers during college. Its campus is in the city, making it easier to work part-time or intern during the academic year rather than relying mainly on summer recruiting.

Chicago employers can recruit UIC students for campus events, interviews, and semester-long roles with little logistical friction, allowing students to build professional relationships over several years before graduation. That repeated local exposure can matter when applying for entry-level roles in the city.

UVA has a strong national reputation and a well-regarded alumni network, particularly helpful for selective paths such as consulting, finance, law, and larger corporate recruiting. A UVA student can absolutely begin in Chicago but would need to be more deliberate about pursuing Chicago-specific internships, networking with alumni in the area, and traveling for opportunities while based in Charlottesville.

Cost should also carry real weight. If UIC is meaningfully less expensive, graduating with less debt can make it easier to accept an entry-level Chicago role, pursue internships that are not highly paid, or take time to find the right first job. UVA may be worth the additional cost when its particular academic programs, campus experience, or recruiting channels closely match your intended field, but for direct Chicago access, UIC has the built-in advantage.
