Is the University of South Carolina or the University of Virginia better for studying hospitality management?

The biggest practical difference is that South Carolina offers a dedicated undergraduate hospitality-management major and industry-focused college, while Virginia does not offer a comparable undergraduate hospitality-management program. USC’s College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management has coursework centered on hotel operations, tourism, event management, food and beverage, and hospitality leadership.

At UVA, a student interested in hospitality would need to build an indirect route, such as studying commerce, economics, media studies, or another related field and then seeking hospitality internships independently. That can work well for someone who wants a broader business or liberal-arts education before entering the industry, particularly for corporate roles in finance, consulting, real estate, or brand strategy. However, it will not provide the same structured exposure to hospitality operations, specialized faculty, or a built-in peer network focused on hotels and tourism.

For a high school student whose stated goal is hotels, tourism, or event management, the University of South Carolina is the clearer academic choice. UVA may make sense only if you strongly prefer its broader academic environment and are comfortable creating your own hospitality specialization through electives, internships, and possibly graduate study.
