UVA vs. Rutgers for Finance: Which Is Better for an Undergraduate Finance Career?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UVA offers a more nationally established undergraduate pipeline into highly selective finance recruiting, while Rutgers can provide excellent New York-area access and potentially much better value, especially for a New Jersey resident. At UVA, the strongest finance recruiting is tied closely to the McIntire School of Commerce, whose finance-focused coursework, alumni network, and on-campus recruiting are particularly visible in investment banking, asset management, and corporate finance.

Rutgers Business School benefits from proximity to New York City and a large alumni base across New Jersey and the broader Northeast. Students who actively use that location for internships during the academic year can build a strong finance résumé, especially for corporate finance, commercial banking, wealth management, accounting-related finance paths, and many middle-market firms. Rutgers students can reach competitive Wall Street roles too, but they typically need to be more deliberate about networking, joining finance organizations, and securing early internships because recruiting is less centrally structured than at McIntire.

Rutgers is a very sensible decision when it comes at a substantially lower price, particularly in-state, or when you want to build a career in the New York/New Jersey market and are prepared to take initiative with internships and networking.
