Is the University of Virginia or Pepperdine better for building a career in California?

The biggest practical tradeoff is proximity versus breadth: Pepperdine places you directly in the Los Angeles professional ecosystem, while UVA offers a larger-scale, nationally recognized alumni and recruiting platform that can travel well to California. Pepperdine students can more readily pursue semester-long internships, informational interviews, and part-time work in LA during the academic year. UVA requires more intentional California networking and summer planning, but its name recognition is strong across the country.

For entertainment, media, certain nonprofit work, real estate, and many LA-based internships, Pepperdine’s Malibu location and Southern California alumni presence can create a real early-career advantage. Its smaller student body may also make faculty and alumni outreach feel more accessible.

UVA has a broad alumni base, established employer recruiting, and a reputation that carries substantial weight with employers in finance, consulting, technology, policy, and graduate-school-oriented fields. California employers know UVA, but you would need to actively use alumni outreach, career programs, and California-focused internships rather than relying on campus proximity.
