Which is better for computer science prestige: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Carnegie Mellon?

I’m trying to compare these two schools mainly by how much their computer science degree is respected. I know both are strong, but I’m not sure how people in tech or grad school usually view them.

I’m not asking about location or cost, just which name tends to carry more prestige for CS.

For pure computer science prestige, Carnegie Mellon usually has the stronger name. In tech, research, and graduate school circles, CMU is often treated as one of the very top CS brands, and its School of Computer Science has an especially concentrated reputation in areas like AI, systems, robotics, and theory. If the question is simply which name tends to carry more weight on prestige alone, CMU has the edge.

That said, the student who chooses UIUC is still choosing a department with extremely high respect. Illinois is one of the most established and admired CS programs in the country, especially among employers and academics who know the field well. A UIUC CS degree is not seen as second-tier in any meaningful sense; it is a serious, nationally recognized credential with a long history of strong placement and research output.

CMU tends to stand out most for a student who cares about the strongest possible brand signal in computer science itself, not just in engineering more broadly. Its reputation is unusually sharp and specific: when people hear CMU CS, they often immediately associate it with top-level technical training and intense peer talent.

UIUC fits the student who wants a name that is still elite in CS but may not get quite the same instant reaction from non-specialists. Within computing, though, it is deeply respected. Many people in industry would view UIUC CS as outstanding, and in some engineering circles its reputation is enormous.

So on the narrow question of prestige in computer science, Carnegie Mellon comes out ahead. UIUC remains exceptionally respected, but CMU is the one more likely to be seen as the absolute heavyweight name.
