Is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Purdue better for engineering prestige?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that these two schools are viewed very similarly in engineering circles, so the difference in prestige is usually smaller than students expect, while the differences in campus environment, cost, and specific program structure often matter more in real outcomes. Both UIUC and Purdue have long-established engineering reputations, large research operations, strong employer pipelines, and national name recognition well beyond their regions. In hiring and grad school contexts, neither is likely to be dismissed as the “less prestigious” option in any broad sense.

If you are asking purely about overall engineering prestige, UIUC tends to have a slight edge in how it is talked about academically and within engineering research, especially because of its long-standing reputation across multiple engineering fields. Purdue, though, is absolutely in the same tier of public engineering powerhouses and has exceptionally strong name recognition with employers, particularly because of its scale, industry ties, and very visible engineering identity.

So the honest answer is not that one is clearly prestigious and the other is not. For a high school student building a list, I would treat both as top-level engineering schools whose prestige will open similar doors.
