For STEM prestige, is University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Georgia Tech generally viewed more highly by employers and grad schools?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Georgia Tech has a slightly sharper national brand as a STEM-first institution, while UIUC has equally serious strength in several STEM areas, especially engineering and computer science, but is sometimes perceived more as a major flagship university with standout technical programs. On a resume or grad school application, both names are highly respected, and neither will be treated as an unknown or second-tier option in STEM circles. The difference in pure name perception exists, but it is usually modest rather than decisive.

Among employers, Georgia Tech often gets a bit more instant recognition as a place built around engineering and technology. That can matter most with recruiters who are not deep specialists and are reacting to school brand quickly. UIUC, though, has an exceptionally strong reputation in engineering and CS, and in many technical hiring contexts, especially with employers who regularly hire engineers or software talent, it carries just as much weight.

For graduate schools, the gap is also small. Faculty and admissions committees tend to know both schools very well, and they care much more about research, coursework, recommendations, and actual preparation than a slight difference in brand aura. In fields like computer science, electrical engineering, and related areas, UIUC is not seen as meaningfully behind Georgia Tech in academic reputation.

So if the question is strictly general STEM prestige, Georgia Tech probably has a slight edge in broad name perception because its identity is so tightly tied to technology and engineering. But if the question is whether that edge meaningfully changes outcomes with serious STEM employers or grad programs, usually not. Between these two, program fit, access to research, internship pipelines, and your performance there will matter far more than whichever name is viewed as a touch more prestigious.
