Is it harder to get into the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Northwestern University?
I’m trying to get a realistic sense of how selective these two schools are because they’re both on my list, but they feel very different. I know one is public and the other is private, and I keep hearing different opinions about which one is harder to get into.
I want to understand the general admissions difficulty between them so I can think about where to focus my application effort.

Northwestern University is harder to get into than the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Northwestern is a highly selective private university with a much more restrictive overall admissions process, while UIUC, though excellent and quite competitive in several areas, admits a broader range of applicants across a much larger undergraduate population.
One major difference is consistency of selectivity across programs. At Northwestern, the bar is extremely high across the university, and strong grades, rigorous coursework, and impressive extracurriculars are common among applicants. UIUC is selective too, but the level of difficulty varies much more by major. Some UIUC programs, especially in engineering, computer science, and business, can be very hard to enter, while other majors are notably more accessible.
Another concrete factor is how each school uses its scale and mission. UIUC is a large public flagship that serves a wide range of in-state, out-of-state, and international students across many colleges and majors. Northwestern is smaller and more uniformly selective, so the admissions process is tighter overall. That means even applicants who would be very competitive at UIUC can still find Northwestern a major reach.
For application strategy, it makes sense to treat Northwestern as the tougher admit in almost any direct comparison. The main exception is when you are comparing Northwestern overall to one of UIUC’s most in-demand specialized programs, where UIUC can become extremely difficult for that specific major even though the university as a whole is still less selective than Northwestern.
