Boston College vs Northeastern for city life: which has the better urban college experience?
I’m trying to figure out which school would feel more connected to city life overall. I know both are in Boston, but I’m more interested in the day-to-day experience like access to the city, getting around, and whether it actually feels urban.
I’m trying to picture what it would be like to live there as a student, especially outside of classes and weekends.

Northeastern has the more urban day-to-day college experience. Its campus sits in the middle of Boston near Back Bay, Fenway, and the South End, with multiple MBTA stops right by campus, so students are constantly moving through the city for food, internships, concerts, and errands. Boston College is in Chestnut Hill on the western edge of Boston, and while it is connected by the Green Line, it feels much more like a traditional residential campus that happens to have city access.
If you want city life woven into everyday routines, Northeastern is the clearer fit. You can walk off campus and immediately be in busy city neighborhoods, and the co-op culture also makes Boston feel like part of student life rather than just a place to visit on weekends. The campus itself is compact, but the surroundings make it feel integrated into the city.
Boston College gives you access to Boston, but it usually feels more separate from it. The main campus is self-contained, green, and more suburban in atmosphere, and many students spend a lot of time on campus or in nearby Cleveland Circle rather than constantly moving through downtown Boston. Getting into denser parts of the city is doable, just less immediate.
For weekends and casual outings, Northeastern students generally have the easier setup for spontaneous city plans because they are already there. BC can be better if you want a classic campus community with Boston as an option, not the backdrop to everyday life.
So the simplest version is this: Northeastern feels like living in Boston, while Boston College feels like living at a campus near Boston.
