WashU vs Carnegie Mellon for computer science: which is better for undergrad CS?

I’m trying to decide between WashU and Carnegie Mellon for computer science, and I keep seeing people describe them very differently. I know both are strong schools, but I want to understand which one is generally considered the better choice for an undergraduate CS degree.

I’m especially confused about how people compare them in terms of CS reputation and overall academic strength in this major.

For undergraduate computer science specifically, Carnegie Mellon is more widely regarded as the standout option. Its School of Computer Science has exceptional name recognition, a very deep range of CS subfields, and a campus culture where computing is central rather than just one strong department among many.

That matters most for a student who wants to be immersed in a highly technical environment from the start. At CMU, computer science is one of the school’s defining strengths, so you tend to find more specialized coursework, more classmates intensely focused on CS, and more direct visibility with employers and researchers in the field. If you are excited by a rigorous, fast-paced, and distinctly tech-heavy undergraduate experience, CMU usually carries more weight in CS reputation.

WashU makes more sense for a student who wants strong computer science within a broader, more balanced university experience. Its CS program is respected and can absolutely lead to strong outcomes, but the school is not primarily known for CS in the way CMU is. WashU may appeal more if you care a lot about flexibility across disciplines, a less singularly engineering-driven atmosphere, or a campus culture that feels more rounded socially and academically.

The clearest difference is that CMU is often viewed as a destination school for CS itself, while WashU is a strong university that also offers CS. So if your question is purely which school is considered stronger in undergraduate CS reputation and academic depth, the answer is Carnegie Mellon. If your real question is where you would thrive as a person while still studying CS, then WashU can still be a very compelling option for someone who wants more balance and less of an all-consuming tech environment.
