What extracurricular activities stand out on a Wisconsin college application profile?

I’m a high school junior putting together my college list and trying to understand what kinds of extracurriculars make a strong profile for Wisconsin colleges. I know grades matter a lot, but I’m not sure whether they care more about leadership, long-term commitment, service, work experience, or something else.

I want to focus my time on the activities that will actually look meaningful on an application, so I’m trying to understand what stands out most on a Wisconsin college extracurricular profile.

For Wisconsin colleges, the extracurriculars that stand out most are the ones that show depth, leadership, and genuine impact rather than a long list of random activities. Universities like UW–Madison, UW–Eau Claire, and other UW System schools tend to value sustained commitment, initiative, and evidence that you took on responsibility or made a difference in your school or community. A student who stays involved for several years and grows into a leadership role will usually look stronger than someone who joins many clubs briefly.

Leadership matters, but it does not have to mean a formal title. Running projects, organizing events, mentoring younger students, or taking ownership in a team or club can all be meaningful. Long-term involvement in something specific, such as debate, band, robotics, student government, athletics, theater, FFA, HOSA, or community service, often stands out because it shows consistency and follow-through.

Service and work experience can also be very strong, especially if they reflect responsibility or commitment to family and community. Part-time jobs, caregiving, helping with a family business, or regular volunteer work can be impressive if you can show what you contributed and what skills you gained. Wisconsin schools usually care less about the “prestige” of the activity and more about how actively and thoughtfully you engaged in it.
