What kinds of clubs and extracurricular activities are available at Barnard College?

I’m a high school student looking into Barnard and trying to understand what student life is like beyond classes. I keep seeing that extracurriculars matter a lot in college, and I want to know what kinds of clubs, organizations, and activities students can actually get involved in there.

I’m especially interested in what the overall range of options is like and whether there are opportunities for different interests, not just one type of student.

Barnard has a wide range of extracurriculars, and because Barnard students can participate in both Barnard and Columbia organizations, the options are especially broad. In practice, that means access to student groups across the two campuses, including cultural organizations, political and advocacy groups, performing arts, publications, community service, identity-based clubs, faith communities, and academic or pre-professional groups.

On the Barnard side, you’ll find groups tied to wellness, leadership, social justice, arts, and campus traditions, along with student government and residential life programming. Barnard also supports activities through centers and offices focused on identity, career exploration, global learning, and public service, so involvement is not limited to standalone clubs.

Because of the Columbia partnership, Barnard students can also join major student organizations in areas like debate, entrepreneurship, dance, theater, music, journalism, STEM, and volunteer work. That cross-registration of student life is one of Barnard’s biggest strengths, since it gives you the feel of a smaller women’s college with access to a much larger university ecosystem.

If you are trying to picture the overall vibe, it is fair to expect a campus culture where activism, the arts, writing, and intellectual communities are especially visible, but there is still plenty of room for niche interests and casual involvement.
