What extracurricular activities help with George Mason University admission?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out how to spend my time outside of class. I know colleges care about extracurriculars, but I’m not sure what kinds of activities George Mason tends to value most.

I’m looking for the kinds of clubs, leadership roles, sports, volunteering, or work experience that would make an application stronger for GMU.

George Mason University does not have a fixed list of extracurriculars it “likes best.” What helps most is sustained involvement, real responsibility, and activities that connect to your interests or intended major. For GMU, a few strong commitments usually look better than joining many random clubs, especially if you show leadership, initiative, service, or impact.

Leadership roles in school clubs, student government, honor societies, robotics, debate, theater, music, and athletics can all strengthen an application. Community service also matters, particularly if it is consistent and tied to a cause you care about rather than one-time hours just for a resume. Paid work, family responsibilities, and internships count too.

If you already know your academic direction, activities related to that field can help most. For example, a prospective engineering or computer science student might benefit from coding projects, robotics, math team, or a tech internship. A student interested in business could show initiative through DECA, running a small business, fundraising leadership, or part-time work with increasing responsibility.

For George Mason specifically, it also helps if your activities reflect engagement with community, collaboration, and problem-solving. Volunteering, peer mentoring, tutoring, research, advocacy, or local civic involvement can all fit well.
