What counts as leadership in extracurricular activities on college applications?

I’m a junior trying to figure out how colleges usually think about “leadership” in activities. I know club president obviously counts, but I’m less sure about things like organizing events, mentoring younger students, or taking on unofficial responsibilities.

I want to describe my involvement honestly, and I’m trying to understand what actually counts as leadership versus just being an active member.

Leadership on college applications is broader than having a title. Yes, roles like president, captain, or founder clearly count, but colleges also absolutely recognize leadership shown through initiative, responsibility, and impact. Organizing an event, training younger members, running logistics, leading a project team, or becoming the person others rely on can all be strong examples of leadership if you describe them clearly.

What matters most is whether you influenced other people, improved how something worked, or took ownership of a meaningful outcome. If you planned a fundraiser, coordinated volunteers, created a tutoring system, mentored new students, managed social media strategy, or solved a recurring problem in the group, that is leadership. Informal leadership often reads very well because it shows people trusted you even without an official title.

On the application, be specific instead of just labeling yourself a leader.

It also helps to distinguish leadership from participation. Showing up consistently, attending meetings, and helping when asked is valuable involvement, but it becomes leadership when you initiate, direct, mentor, coordinate, or make decisions that affect the group. If you had unofficial responsibilities, you can still present them honestly by naming the function: “Student mentor,” “event coordinator,” “section leader,” “project lead,” or “senior member overseeing new recruits,” as long as those descriptions are accurate.
