How can I apply to CU Boulder successfully as a high school student?

I’m a junior starting to look seriously at colleges, and CU Boulder is one of my top choices. I know I need to put together a strong application, but I’m not totally sure what parts matter most for being a competitive applicant.

I’m mainly trying to understand what makes an application strong for CU Boulder in general, beyond just having good grades and test scores.

To apply successfully to CU Boulder as a high school student, focus first on a solid academic record, especially in college-prep courses, and then make sure the rest of your application shows genuine interest, consistency, and fit. The university uses an overall review process, so coursework rigor, GPA trend, and the story your activities tell all matter, not just one number.

CU Boulder is a large public research university, so admissions readers want to see that you can handle a challenging academic environment and make use of the opportunities there. Taking AP, IB, honors, or other advanced classes when available is helpful, especially if you keep your performance steady or improve over time. A clear upward trend can matter a lot if your early grades were weaker.

Your activities should show more than just a long list. It helps if you have depth in a few areas, such as leadership in a club, long-term community involvement, work experience, research, athletics, or a personal project. CU Boulder also pays attention to how you contribute to your school and community, so concrete impact is more effective than vague descriptions.

For the application itself, be careful and specific in your essays and short answers. If CU Boulder asks about your interests or why you’re drawn to the university, connect your goals to actual resources at Boulder, like a major, program, campus experience, or research opportunity that fits what you want to study.
