What makes a strong CU Boulder application for admission?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out what CU Boulder seems to value most in applicants. I know the basics matter, but I’m trying to understand what makes an application feel strong overall.

I want to focus my next year on the right things and not waste time guessing what stands out.

A strong CU Boulder application is one that shows solid academic preparation, consistent effort over time, and a clear fit with the university’s collaborative, research-minded environment. The application becomes stronger when your activities show depth, initiative, and genuine engagement rather than just a long list of clubs. If you can also show that you’re ready for a large public research university and excited to contribute there, that helps a lot.

Academically, CU Boulder wants to see that you challenged yourself with honors, AP, IB, dual enrollment, or other advanced coursework available at your school. Strong performance in core subjects is especially important, because that is the clearest signal you can handle the pace at Boulder. For more selective majors or programs, your preparation in the relevant subject area matters even more, so a student aiming for engineering, business, or a STEM major should show strength in math and science.

Outside the classroom, CU Boulder tends to value depth and leadership more than quantity. Long-term commitment to one or two activities, meaningful responsibility, community impact, or self-driven projects can make your application feel much stronger. If your work or family responsibilities shaped what you were able to do after school, that can also be meaningful if you explain it clearly.

The essays and optional information are best used to add context and personality, not repeat your resume. CU Boulder responds well to students who can show curiosity, resilience, and a real reason they want Boulder specifically, whether that connects to research, the outdoors, innovation, arts, or campus community.
