What should I look for on a University of Vermont campus visit?

I’m planning to visit UVM soon and I want to make the most of it instead of just walking around the main areas. I’m trying to figure out what details usually tell you whether a campus feels like a good fit.

I know a visit can show a lot more than the brochure does, so I want to know what to pay attention to while I’m there.

On a UVM visit, pay attention to how easy it feels to move between the academic core, housing, and downtown Burlington. UVM is very integrated with the city, so the campus experience is shaped by both the university itself and the Burlington setting, especially around Main Campus, the Redstone area, and the walk down toward Church Street and the waterfront.

Look at the vibe in classrooms and common spaces, not just the tour stops. If possible, sit in on a class, check how students interact with each other, and notice whether spaces like the Dudley H. Davis Center, the library, and dining halls feel lively, collaborative, or more independent. That will tell you a lot about the day-to-day culture.

Housing is another big clue. Ask where students actually spend time after class, how often they stay on campus versus going into Burlington, and whether the social life feels balanced for you.

It also helps to look for signs of academic support and environmental values. If you care about research, community engagement, or outdoor access, see whether those opportunities are easy to spot and easy to imagine yourself using.
