How easy is it for undergraduates at Tulane to get involved in research?

I’m trying to compare colleges based on how accessible research is for undergrads, especially during the school year and not just in the summer.

Tulane looks interesting to me, but I can’t tell whether research there is something most motivated students can actually join early on or if it’s mostly limited to a smaller group of students.

Tulane is one of the more undergraduate-friendly research universities, and motivated students can usually find ways to get involved during the school year, not just in the summer. It helps that Tulane is mid-sized, has strong research activity in areas like public health, neuroscience, engineering, and environmental/coastal studies, and puts a lot of emphasis on undergraduate engagement. Research is not reserved only for a tiny honors-only group, though access still depends on your field, timing, and how proactive you are.

A real advantage at Tulane is that undergrads can connect with faculty fairly early, especially compared with larger universities where labs may be dominated by graduate students and postdocs. Tulane also has structured support through undergraduate research programs and funding. The annual Research, Scholarship, and Artistic Achievement Day is another sign that undergrad research is a visible part of campus life.

During the school year, students often get involved by emailing professors, taking classes that lead into lab work, or building relationships through office hours. In practice, first-year students can get involved, but it is usually easier by sophomore year once you have some coursework and clearer interests. Fields like lab sciences may require more persistence at the start, while public health, social science, and community-based research can sometimes be more accessible earlier.
