What counts as Arizona residency for Arizona State University admission purposes?

I’m a high school student whose family recently moved, and I’m confused about how ASU decides whether an applicant is considered an Arizona resident. I keep seeing residency mentioned, but I’m not sure what actually counts for admission purposes.

I’m trying to understand the general standard ASU uses so I can tell whether I would likely be treated as in-state or out-of-state when I apply.

For ASU, Arizona residency is generally based on whether you are legally domiciled in Arizona, not just whether you currently live there. In most cases, a dependent student takes the residency of the parent or legal guardian they live with and who claims them for tax purposes.

Domicile means Arizona is their true, permanent home, shown through actions like living and working in Arizona, paying Arizona taxes, getting an Arizona driver’s license, registering a vehicle there, and registering to vote if eligible.

The key question is whether your parent or guardian has made Arizona their permanent home before classes begin. Simply owning property, renting for a short period, or being in Arizona mainly for school usually is not enough by itself.
