What does American University look for in applicants to its Honors Program?

I’m a high school junior and American is one of the schools I’m looking at closely. I understand the general admissions side a lot better than the honors side, and I’m trying to figure out what kinds of things usually make someone a strong fit for the Honors Program.

I’m especially wondering whether it’s mostly about grades and rigor, or if they seem to care a lot about essays, activities, and overall academic interests too.

American University’s Honors Program is usually looking for more than just very strong grades. Academic performance and course rigor matter a lot, but the students who stand out tend to also show intellectual curiosity, strong writing, and a clear interest in engaging deeply with ideas across disciplines.

In practice, that means a strong fit often includes a challenging high school curriculum, excellent grades, and evidence that you seek out learning beyond what is required. That could show up through research, academic clubs, debate, journalism, independent projects, service tied to an issue you care about, or sustained involvement in a few activities where you think seriously and contribute meaningfully.

Essays can matter a lot for honors-style review because they help show how you think. If your application shows a genuine academic voice, specific interests, and the ability to reflect thoughtfully, that helps.

They are not usually looking only for students with the longest activity list. A focused profile can work very well if your interests connect clearly. For example, a student interested in public policy, communication, or international affairs might stand out by showing both academic strength and a pattern of engagement with those themes.

So yes, grades and rigor are important, but the Honors Program is also paying attention to whether you seem like someone who will thrive in a small, discussion-heavy, academically engaged environment.
