Is the American University virtual tour a good way to figure out campus vibe if I can’t visit in person?

I’m a high school junior trying to build my college list, and American University is one of the schools I’m interested in. I probably won’t be able to travel to D.C. to visit, so I’m wondering how useful the virtual tour is for getting a real sense of the campus and student atmosphere.

I don’t want to rely on something that feels too polished if it won’t actually help me decide whether the school is a good fit.

Yes, American University’s virtual tour can be genuinely useful, but it’s best for understanding the physical campus and general feel, not the full student atmosphere by itself.

It should give you a decent sense of the layout, buildings, green space, and how residential the campus feels.

Where virtual tours usually fall short is vibe. They tend to be polished, quiet, and idealized, so they won’t fully show how social the campus feels, or what day-to-day life is actually like.

If you cannot visit, I’d pair the virtual tour with a few more specific sources. Look for a recorded info session, student panels, and the school newspaper or student-run social media. Those usually reveal more about campus personality, stress level, events, and what students actually talk about.
