What makes a strong Why American University essay?

I’m applying to American University and I’m not sure what schools usually want from a “Why us” essay beyond just naming programs and clubs. I want mine to sound specific and genuine, not like I copied things from the website.

I’m trying to figure out what actually makes this kind of essay strong for a school like AU.

A strong Why American University essay shows a clear match between how you like to learn, what you care about, and the specific opportunities AU offers. The key is not just naming a program, club, or center, but explaining why that detail matters to you and how you would use it.

For AU, the strongest essays usually feel connected to its identity: politically engaged, globally minded, service-oriented, and very tied to Washington, DC. If you are writing about AU as if it were any other private university with good academics and internships, the essay will feel generic.

What tends to work best is a 3-part structure. First, identify 1 or 2 academic or personal interests you genuinely want to pursue. Second, connect those interests to very specific AU resources such as a major, course, research center, public service opportunity, student publication, or DC-based internship pipeline. Third, explain what you would do with those opportunities once you are there.

The most important move is the “why this matters to me” sentence. For example, don’t just say you want the School of International Service. Say what question, issue, or experience makes that school exciting to you, such as migration policy, conflict resolution, or international development. Then show how AU would help you explore it in a hands-on way.

You also want to avoid listing too many things. Two well-developed AU-specific details are usually stronger than six quick mentions. Depth sounds more genuine than breadth.

A good essay might connect your interest in local policy to AU’s location in DC, then tie that to a professor, a policy center, or a student organization where you could test ideas beyond the classroom. That feels much more real than saying AU has strong academics, diverse students, and many clubs.

One useful test: if you could replace “American University” with another school’s name and most of the essay still works, it is not specific enough. The essay should make it obvious why AU fits you in particular.
