Is UVA or Northeastern better for building a career in Boston?

For building an early-career network in Boston, Northeastern has the clearer advantage. Its Boston campus places you near major employers throughout college, and its co-op program is designed to turn full-time work experience into employer relationships before graduation.

The co-op structure is the biggest differentiator. Students can complete extended, full-time work placements. That proximity makes semester-time internships, networking events, informational interviews, and part-time roles more accessible than they would be from Charlottesville.

UVA can still lead to a Boston career, especially for students who perform well academically and use its strong alumni network intentionally. The McIntire School of Commerce, for example, is well regarded by employers, and UVA graduates work across major East Coast markets.

For a student whose priority is establishing Boston-based professional ties during college, Northeastern’s location and experiential-learning model create a more direct path. UVA may be compelling for other reasons, including a traditional residential college experience and particular academic programs, but it requires more deliberate effort to build Boston connections from outside the region.
