Which is better for getting a job in California, UVA or USC?

For a student who plans to begin a career in California, USC has the clearer built-in advantage. Its Los Angeles location puts students near California employers throughout college, making semester-time internships, networking events, and campus recruiting more accessible. The Trojan alumni network is especially visible across Southern California in entertainment, technology, real estate, business, media, and many professional-service fields.

Employers in Los Angeles, Orange County, and the Bay Area are accustomed to recruiting USC students, and many internships can become return offers or provide local references before graduation.

UVA has an excellent national reputation and alumni who work in California, so attending UVA would not prevent a California job search. However, its most concentrated alumni and recruiting presence is in Virginia, Washington, D.C., and the broader East Coast. A UVA student targeting California can succeed, but would likely need to be more intentional about pursuing California summer internships, alumni outreach, and travel for networking.

USC is therefore the more direct path for California-focused recruiting, particularly if you are still exploring industries and want frequent local exposure. UVA may still be compelling if its academic program, cost, or campus experience is substantially stronger for you, but USC’s regional network is the more useful asset for this specific goal.
