For internships, compare the employers that recruit on each campus, the student organizations you would actually join, and the ease of reaching opportunities during the school year. Cal Poly’s location and alumni presence can be a meaningful advantage for California companies, particularly for students aiming at West Coast software roles. Its career-focused peer culture can also make it easier to find classmates building projects, preparing for technical interviews, and pursuing internships early.

UVA has an advantage if you value a broader network beyond the technology sector and want geographic flexibility in places such as the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and major national hubs. Its larger university environment can be useful for combining CS with areas such as business, data science, product design, or entrepreneurship. For a software engineering job, though, neither name alone will decide the outcome; internships, technical interview preparation, projects, and strong CS fundamentals will matter more.

For a student whose priority is a direct, hands-on path to a California-based software internship and first job, Cal Poly is likely the more aligned choice.
