Is UVA or NC State better for getting internships in Raleigh?

The biggest practical tradeoff is local access versus a broader, more geographically dispersed brand and alumni network: NC State puts you in Raleigh, while UVA puts you in Charlottesville. For internships during the academic year, NC State students can more readily attend local recruiting events, interview in person, and work part-time or hybrid roles with Raleigh and Research Triangle Park employers.

NC State’s location matters most for opportunities that require regular office time. Raleigh, Durham, Cary, and RTP are close enough for students to build relationships through career fairs, student organizations, faculty research, and semester-long internships without needing to relocate.

UVA can still lead to Raleigh internships, particularly for students with strong technical preparation, projects, prior experience, or connections. UVA’s alumni network is substantial and its computer science reputation travels well, but its recruiting ecosystem is more concentrated in Virginia, the Washington, D.C. area, and major national hubs than in Raleigh specifically.

For a computer science student whose priority is finding internships in Raleigh while enrolled, NC State has the clearer practical advantage. UVA may be worth choosing for other academic, campus, or long-term reasons, but it does not offer the same day-to-day proximity or locally embedded recruiting pipeline into the Raleigh-area market.
