Is Florida State or UC Davis better for preparing for veterinary school?

I’m a high school senior comparing Florida State and UC Davis for an undergraduate path toward veterinary school. I’m trying to understand which university generally offers stronger preparation for pre-vet students, especially through relevant coursework and animal science opportunities.

UC Davis offers the more direct and resource-rich undergraduate path to veterinary school. It has a dedicated Animal Science major, a veterinary school on the same campus, and broad access to animal-focused coursework and research. Florida State can still prepare a student well for veterinary admissions, but its pre-vet route is more biology-based and less integrated with animal science.

At UC Davis, students can study animal biology, nutrition, genetics, physiology, and livestock or companion-animal systems while completing the science prerequisites veterinary schools expect. The campus’s teaching and research farms, animal facilities, and veterinary medicine environment create opportunities to build sustained experience with animals, faculty researchers, and veterinary-related organizations.

FSU’s strengths are its biology and chemistry foundation, research opportunities, and pre-health advising. A student there can complete prerequisite courses for veterinary programs and gain animal or clinical hours through local shelters, clinics, wildlife organizations, or summer experiences. However, FSU does not have UC Davis’s on-campus veterinary school or the same concentration of animal-science courses and facilities.

Cost and academic performance still matter substantially. Veterinary schools care far more about strong grades in prerequisites, meaningful animal and veterinary experience, recommendations, and a well-supported application than the name of the undergraduate institution. For a Florida resident who would attend FSU at a much lower cost, choosing FSU and deliberately building animal experience can be a sensible route; otherwise, UC Davis provides the more specialized pre-vet ecosystem.
