Which is better for computer science job placement: Florida State or Rutgers?

For computer science job placement, Rutgers University, especially the New Brunswick campus, offers the stronger overall recruiting and alumni-network advantage. Its location in New Jersey puts students within reach of employers across the New York City, northern New Jersey, and Philadelphia corridors, where there is a dense concentration of software, finance, healthcare-tech, consulting, and large corporate technology roles. Rutgers also has a large, established alumni base in those markets.

That geography matters for internships, which are often the clearest route to a full-time entry-level offer. Rutgers students can more readily pursue semester-long, part-time, or in-person internships in addition to summer positions. The size of Rutgers’s computing community also creates more peer connections to internships, student projects, hackathons, and referrals.

Florida State can still lead to excellent software jobs, particularly for students targeting Florida employers, government technology work, or roles connected to Tallahassee’s public-sector presence. Its computer science students can build competitive outcomes through internships, strong projects, and technical interview preparation. But Tallahassee has a smaller local private-tech recruiting ecosystem than the Rutgers region, so students may need to be more proactive about pursuing internships elsewhere. Cost should still matter: a substantially lower net price at FSU could outweigh Rutgers’s placement edge, since neither school guarantees a job solely through its name.
