Which is better for computer science internships: Florida State or Northeastern?

For a student whose top priority is building substantial, structured work experience before graduation, Northeastern has the clearer advantage. Its co-op program is built into the undergraduate experience and gives computer science students an established path to full-time, multi-month roles with employers in Boston and beyond. Northeastern’s location also places students near a dense technology, startup, healthcare, finance, and research ecosystem, which can make both co-ops and part-time semester opportunities more accessible.

The key benefit is not merely that internships exist, but that the school has long-standing infrastructure, advising, employer relationships, and a student culture oriented around co-op recruiting. Students still need to apply, interview, and perform well academically, but the process is unusually integrated into the degree.

Florida State can work very well for a proactive CS student, particularly one who values a more traditional four-year college experience, lower overall cost, or opportunities in Florida and state-government-related technology. FSU students pursue internships through career services, faculty connections, projects, networking, and summer applications; Tallahassee also offers access to public-sector and government-adjacent employers. But internships are less structurally embedded in the curriculum, and the local private-sector tech market is smaller than Boston’s.

For internship access alone, Northeastern is the stronger choice. FSU becomes especially compelling when its financial advantage is large enough that graduating with less debt matters more than Northeastern’s more developed co-op pipeline.
