Is Florida State University or the University of Wisconsin–Madison better for political science?

For political science on overall academic strength and national reputation, the University of Wisconsin–Madison has the edge. Its department is especially well regarded for political theory, American politics, comparative politics, international relations, and quantitative research, with a large research university’s breadth of courses and faculty. UW–Madison also connects students to the La Follette School of Public Affairs and to policy-oriented work across the university.

Florida State is still a very credible choice, and its Tallahassee location is an unusually direct advantage for students focused on Florida government. Being near the Florida Legislature, governor’s office, state agencies, courts, and lobbying organizations can make it easier to build a state-policy résumé during the academic year. FSU’s political science program is particularly appealing for someone who wants hands-on exposure to state politics, public administration, or Florida-focused legal and policy work.

The distinction is that UW–Madison offers the deeper overall political science platform, while FSU’s principal advantage is immediate access to Florida’s political institutions. For a student choosing primarily on the academic breadth, research environment, and national standing of the major, UW–Madison is the stronger pick.
