It offers unusually dense access to biomedical research, a world-famous academic medical center directly tied to the university, and a campus culture built around students aiming for medicine, public health, and the life sciences.

For research, Hopkins has a major edge. Undergraduates are surrounded by labs in biology, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and public health, and the university’s connection to Johns Hopkins Hospital and the School of Medicine creates a very direct pipeline into medically relevant projects. At Arizona State, research absolutely exists and can be substantial, but Hopkins places you in a much more concentrated pre-med and biomedical environment.

For clinical exposure, Hopkins again stands out because of proximity and integration. Being near a top teaching hospital matters for shadowing, patient-facing volunteering, and finding mentors who are physicians or physician-scientists.
