Its undergraduate campus is in Winston-Salem, near Wake Forest Baptist medical facilities and the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, which can make it easier to build sustained relationships with physicians, researchers, and health-focused mentors. The university’s pre-health advising and smaller class environment can be especially valuable for students who benefit from active guidance on course planning, committee materials, and the medical-school application process.

Arizona State can be an excellent premed choice for an independent, proactive student who wants the scale and variety of a major research university. In the Phoenix area, students can pursue clinical exposure, volunteering, shadowing, and research across a large health-care market that includes major hospital systems and medical centers. ASU also offers substantial research breadth, so a student interested in areas such as neuroscience, public health, biomedical engineering, health policy, or population health may find unusually wide options.

The tradeoff is structure. At ASU, the number of opportunities is a real advantage, but students often need to seek them out, manage large-course settings, and create their own mentoring network. At Wake Forest, opportunities may feel more concentrated and accessible, though the campus and surrounding area offer less of the sheer variety of metropolitan Phoenix.
