Is Florida State University or University of South Florida better for biology majors?

I’m trying to decide between Florida State and USF for biology, and I’m having trouble comparing them in a meaningful way. I want to study biology as an undergrad and hopefully keep my options open for research or pre-med.

I’m mostly looking for which school tends to be the stronger choice overall for biology.

Florida State University has the edge overall for an undergraduate biology major, especially if you want a broader traditional college environment while keeping both research and pre-med options open.

One important difference is the undergraduate environment. FSU tends to offer the more cohesive college experience, with a large residential student body, active campus life, and a campus culture that feels centered on undergraduates. That matters more than it sounds, because for a biology major, your day-to-day experience includes more than classes: study groups, advising, student organizations, and access to faculty all shape how well you do.

USF’s biggest advantage is its location and research ecosystem. Because it is closely connected to major health and medical facilities in Tampa, USF can be especially appealing for students who want proximity to hospitals, biomedical research, and clinical volunteering. That can be very useful for pre-med, and USF has real strengths in health-related science pathways.

For pure biology at the undergraduate level, though, FSU is usually the cleaner pick because it combines solid academics with a stronger overall undergraduate identity. If your goal is a balanced four-year biology experience with good flexibility for lab work, pre-med prerequisites, and campus opportunities, FSU stands out more consistently. USF becomes more compelling if your priority is being in a major metro area with easier access to medical settings and applied research connections.
