Is Binghamton or the University of South Carolina more fun for a college student?

The biggest tradeoff is this: South Carolina has a bigger, more traditional high-energy college atmosphere, while Binghamton tends to have a more campus-centered, low-key weekend scene. At South Carolina, SEC sports, tailgates, Greek life, and being in downtown Columbia create a more constant sense that something is happening. Binghamton has active clubs, campus events, and plenty of social life too, but the overall vibe is less spirited in the big-school, rah-rah sense.

If by “fun” you mean packed football Saturdays, lots of school pride, and easier access to off-campus restaurants, bars, and city nightlife, South Carolina usually comes out ahead. Columbia gives students more to do beyond campus, and the school leans into the traditional social experience in a visible way.

Binghamton can still be fun, especially for students who like a social scene built around friend groups, residence halls, apartment gatherings, club involvement, and occasional campus programming rather than major sports culture. It has strong student involvement and people definitely find their scene there, but weekends are more likely to depend on who you know and what plans you make.

Weather and setting also matter more than people expect. South Carolina’s warmer climate makes outdoor social life easier for more of the year, while Binghamton’s long winters can make campus feel quieter at times. That does not make Binghamton dull, but it does affect the energy.

For overall student life and weekend atmosphere, South Carolina is more likely to feel “fun” to the average student. Binghamton is still a good social school, just with a less electric and less outwardly spirited feel.
