Is Binghamton or the University of Vermont more laid back?

I’m trying to get a sense of campus vibe while narrowing down my college list. Both schools seem like good fits academically, but I care a lot about whether the overall atmosphere feels more relaxed or more intense.

I’m mostly wondering which one tends to have a more laid back student culture.

The University of Vermont tends to feel more laid back than Binghamton. UVM has a more outdoorsy, informal campus culture tied closely to Burlington, and students often describe the social atmosphere as relaxed, friendly, and less competition-driven. Binghamton is still social, but its vibe is more academically focused and can come across as more intense day to day.

One big difference is the surrounding environment. UVM is in Burlington, which has a small-city, outdoors-oriented feel with easy access to the lake, trails, skiing, and a strong local arts and music scene. That setting really shapes student life and gives the school a more easygoing personality.

At Binghamton, the student body has more of a pre-professional, high-achieving energy. It is a place where students often care a lot about internships, research, grades, and structured campus involvement, so even though people absolutely have fun, the overall mood can feel more driven and less loose.

The social style also differs. UVM often has a reputation for students being a bit more alternative, outdoorsy, and casually social, while Binghamton can feel more conventional and academically serious. If what you mean by laid back is lower-pressure, less competitive energy, and more of an outdoors-meets-college-town atmosphere, UVM is the one that more clearly fits that description.
