Which is better for finance careers, Florida State or Rutgers?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location-driven access versus lower-cost, more regional reach: Rutgers gives you much easier proximity to New York and New Jersey finance internships during the school year, while Florida State can be a strong value option but is farther from the country’s largest finance hub. For finance specifically, that proximity matters because internships often convert into full-time offers, and Rutgers students can more realistically commute or travel frequently for networking, interviews, and part-time in-semester opportunities. Rutgers also benefits from a large alumni presence across the Northeast, especially in New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia-area firms.

Florida State still has real strengths. Its business school is well known in Florida, and it can place students effectively into corporate finance, banking, real estate, and related roles across Florida cities like Tampa, Jacksonville, Miami, and Orlando. If you want to build a career in the Southeast, especially in Florida, FSU can be a very solid platform, and in-state tuition can make the return on investment appealing.

For pure finance recruiting breadth, though, Rutgers usually has the stronger setup. Being close to NYC helps with investment banking, asset management, wealth management, and other finance paths where networking is highly relationship-driven. That does not mean Rutgers automatically places better in every niche, but it tends to offer more direct exposure to firms, alumni events, and internships tied to the Northeast market.

My view is that Rutgers has the clearer edge if your goal is maximizing finance recruiting access, especially for New York-oriented careers. Florida State becomes more compelling when cost is meaningfully lower or when you know you want to work in Florida or the broader Southeast after graduation.
