On day-to-day workload, UChicago is more likely to feel consistently rigorous across subjects because nearly everyone moves through a common set of demanding general education courses. That often means dense reading, frequent papers, and classes where preparation really matters. Amherst can still be very intense, especially in reading-heavy humanities and social science classes or upper-level seminars, but the pressure is often less system-wide.
