How many AP classes should I take to be competitive for UChicago admissions?

I’m trying to figure out how much course rigor matters for UChicago compared with just having strong grades. My school offers a limited number of AP classes, so I’m not sure what would be considered enough to show that I challenged myself.

There is no fixed number of AP classes you need for UChicago. What matters most is that you take one of the most rigorous schedules available at your high school and do well in it. If your school offers only a limited number of APs, UChicago will evaluate your course choices in that context, not against applicants from schools with dozens of AP options.

For UChicago, course rigor is very important, but it is not separate from grades. Strong grades in challenging classes are better than a packed AP schedule with weaker performance. In practice, a competitive applicant usually has taken several of the hardest courses available across the core areas, especially English, math, science, social science, and foreign language when possible.

Admissions readers usually look at the school profile to see what was available, what is typical, and whether you pushed yourself relative to your environment.

A good rule is to ask whether your transcript shows sustained challenge each year, not just a last-minute jump in senior year. Honors, IB, dual enrollment, and advanced school-specific courses can all count toward rigor too. For UChicago specifically, intellectual seriousness and academic curiosity matter a lot, so the strongest transcript usually shows both challenging coursework and consistently high performance within the opportunities your school provides.
